On Thursday, November 20, 2014, at 16:00 at the SFU Harbour Centre, the Vancouver Institute for Visual Analytics (VIVA) will be hosting its first Industry – Visual Analytics Learning Environment (VALE) meet-up event. This event will be an opportunity for organizations to present their data, context, questions, and problems to the students involved in VALE at SFU and UBC.
The purpose of this event is to foster collaborative projects between industry and students, using real-world data and problems. This benefits students who apply their Visual Analytics (VA) skills and knowledge in a productive and relevant environment, as well as organizations that can evaluate the relevance and value of VA in an applied context.
The resulting projects can vary in scope, duration and intensity. They can range from informal exploration of these data and problems by VALE students, to more structured internship projects that may be eligible for financial matching by research support programs, such as Mitacs.
If you are interested in participating in the SpeedData event, please register here, and we will contact you with the details of the event.
If you'd like more information, please refer to the Facebook page here.

You're invited to our Cognitive Systems Alumni and Professors Night, which the Cognitive Systems Society is hosting in response to the questions we've been hearing from current students about which opportunities will be open to them after graduation. We'd love to have you share your experiences of the paths you've taken since you graduated and where you are now, either in a short presentation (~5 minutes) or through mingling with students and faculty throughout the night.
The evening will consist of about 45 minutes of presentations, followed by a meet and mingle, and will be a great opportunity for many generations of Cogs students to get to know each other and talk about all manner of Cogs-related subjects.
This event will take place at 7 pm on Tuesday, March 4th. Please let us know if you are able to attend and whether you'd like to give a short presentation here.
If you have questions or would like more information, contact our study chair, Na'ama Av-Shalom, here.
We're looking forward to seeing you there!
